Two beaches
just outside Europe.
First
cameo.
The sad man
walked / with in his arms / a drowned little boy / over the salty beach / and
laid the toddler / softly where sand meets sea / calmly following the
Mediterranean tide
Briefly he
muttered mournful / a loving prayer for him / the dead little child / then
he stepped aside / for the professional photographer / to take his flashy image
It was a poignant
way / to break those walls / of that fortress Europe / would a dead child / finally
raise some compassion / however staged the shoot / would it soften hearts
Second
cameo.
The
children were playing / soccer along side the sea / they looked happy carefree
/ the watchman through binoculars / scrutinized along the fences / on the Gaza border
The young Palestinian
players / barefoot on the sand / tried to extend their game / happy for the
moment / dreading the evening home / hungry in battered houses
The soldier
on the watchtower / smiled sadly at the ball / that crossed the border / he
would have loved / to kick it back / but for the landmines / they would not permit
Fade out.
